Why is Google Finance so slow?
Short answer: it isn't slow, it's late— and it doesn't stream. Those are two different problems, and a third one shows up in Google Sheets. Here's what's actually happening.

Those are real, live prices — no formula, no sign-up. Edit any ticker, or type one in the empty row (stocks or for crypto).
Open the full sheet →1. The prices are delayed, not slow
This is the big one. Google Finance uses free, exchange-delayed market data — about 15–20 minutesbehind for US stocks, and longer for some foreign exchanges. So when the number looks wrong compared to your broker, it isn't lagging behind your internet connection; it's showing you the market from 20 minutes ago. Refreshing harder doesn't help — the data itself is behind.
2. The page doesn't stream — it only updates when you reload
A real-time quote board pusheseach tick to your screen. Google Finance doesn't: the number is fetched when the page loads and then mostly sits there. That's why it feels frozen — you watch it, and nothing moves, so you reload to see if anything changed. Combined with the 20-minute delay, you're reloading a page to see old data.
3. In Google Sheets, it recalculates slowly — then throttles
The GOOGLEFINANCE function has its own speed problems:
- It only recalculates while the sheet is open — close the tab and nothing updates at all.
- Once a sheet has a lot of calls, Google rate-limits them and cells sit on “Loading…” — the more tickers you track, the slower it gets.
- Even when it finally updates, the value is still the delayed one.
So is it getting worse, or is it just me?
A bit of both. The underlying delay hasn't changed — it's a licensing choice, not a bug (the full reason here). What has changed is expectations: brokerage apps and crypto exchanges all stream live now, so a page that updates on reload feels much slower than it did a few years ago. Google Finance stayed the same while everything around it got faster.
Want a price that moves the moment the market does? Type a ticker and watch it tick — no reload, no formulas, no 20-minute delay. Free, no sign-up.

If you only need a rough number once in a while, Google Finance is fine — free and good enough. If you're checking it repeatedly during the day, that's the signal you've outgrown it: you're reloading because it won't tell you anything on its own.
Stealth Quotes fixes both halves at once. The prices are real-time, not delayed, and they're streamed— the cell changes color and value the instant the price moves, so there's nothing to reload and nothing to wait for. And it looks like an ordinary spreadsheet, which is handy if you're checking at your desk.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Google Finance so slow?
Three different things get called "slow." The prices are exchange-delayed by about 15–20 minutes, so they're late rather than slow. The page doesn't stream, so a number only changes when you reload. And in Google Sheets, GOOGLEFINANCE recalculates only while the sheet is open — and throttles once a sheet has many formulas.
Is Google Finance delayed or just lagging?
Delayed. It uses free, exchange-delayed market data — typically 15–20 minutes behind for US stocks, and longer for some foreign exchanges. No amount of refreshing makes it current, because the data itself is behind.
Why does my Google Sheets stock price take so long to update?
GOOGLEFINANCE only recalculates while the sheet is open, and Google rate-limits sheets with lots of GOOGLEFINANCE calls — which is why cells can sit on "Loading...". Even after it updates, the price is still the delayed one.
How do I get prices that update instantly?
Use something that streams instead of polling. Stealth Quotes pushes real-time stock and crypto prices into a spreadsheet-style grid — the cell changes the moment the price does, with no reload and no formulas.
Stop reloading. Watch it move.
Real-time stock and crypto prices streamed straight into a spreadsheet — no delay, no refresh, no formulas. Free, no sign-up.
