1. It only updates while the sheet is open
GOOGLEFINANCE recalculates only while the tab is open. Close the sheet and every value freezes at its last state; reopen it and they reload. If you left a watchlist open in another tab yesterday, you may be staring at yesterday's numbers until it recalculates.
2. Your recalculation setting is throttling it
Even open, GOOGLEFINANCE obeys the sheet's recalculation setting. Go to File → Settings → Calculation → Recalculation and choose "On change and every minute" — the fastest GOOGLEFINANCE allows. The default refreshes external data less often, which can make prices look frozen for long stretches.
3. It IS updating — the data is just 15–20 minutes behind
The one people mistake most for a bug: GOOGLEFINANCE's price is exchange-delayed up to 20 minutes. The cell can be recalculating perfectly and still not match the live market, because the data feed itself lags. If the number moves but always trails, that's the "delayed up to 20 minutes" behavior, not a refresh problem.
4. The cell shows #N/A or a stale value
A wrong ticker, a missing exchange prefix, or an unsupported attribute returns #N/A instead of updating. Re-enter the cell to force a refresh, and see the full list of #N/A causes and fixes.
5. Historical data doesn't update at all
The historical form — GOOGLEFINANCE with a start/end date — returns a fixed table, not a live value. It won't change on refresh by design. Only the real-time attributes recalculate.
