What it actually means
The price you're looking at is exchange-delayed — up to 20 minutes behind real trading. For a stock moving fast, the number can already be old by the time you read it. This is true both on Google Finance (google.com/finance) and for the GOOGLEFINANCE function inside Google Sheets.
Why it's delayed — licensing, not a limitation
Real-time exchange data is licensed and expensive. Google offers this for free by using delayeddata, which carries far lighter licensing. It's the line between showing you a price and handing over live, raw market data — the full reason GOOGLEFINANCE is delayed is here.
It varies by exchange ("up to" 20 minutes)
"Up to 20 minutes" is the ceiling, not a fixed number. Some markets come through closer to real time; many US quotes run the full 15–20 minutes behind. You can't choose — it's whatever Google's feed provides for that exchange.
And it freezes when the sheet is closed
On top of the delay, GOOGLEFINANCE only recalculates while the tab is open. Close it and the number stops entirely — which is why sheets so often look "not updating".
